The Mbaduku people of Tsar

A border clan of the Kunav Tiv, rooted in Vandeikya Local Government Area. Tsar is their principal town — market, meeting ground, and the place sons and daughters return for Mbaduku Day.

People

Who the Mbaduku are

Mbaduku means “those of Duku.” They are one of the eight traditional clans of Kunav, the Tiv grouping that gives Vandeikya its character. In Tiv social logic a name like Mbaduku is both a people and a territory (tar): lineage and land travel together.

They sit on the southeastern edge of Benue State, in contact with Kwande LGA and with Obudu in Cross River State. Local memory praises enterprise, valour, and a stubborn kind of unity.

“If you touch one Mbaduku person, the whole of Mbaduku will respond.”

Attributed to Tor Chenge Kyaagba (Ajankwe), “the Light and Thunder of Mbaduku.”

Place

Tsar and Vandeikya

Tsar (also written Tser) is Mbaduku’s main town and the usual stage for the Mbaduku Development Association homecoming. It historically hosted one of the great markets of southern Tivland.

Vandeikya LGA was carved from Gboko in 1976. The traditional head is the Ter Kunav — Father of Kunav — a reminder that kinship still outranks the colonial map.

Figures

People the clan remembers

Makir Dzakpe

Born 11 April 1896 at Mbayar, Nyumagbagh, Mbaduku. First Tor Tiv (1946–1956). His accession opened rotation of the stool between Ipusu and Ichongo.

Tor Chenge Kyaagba

Ajankwe. United Mbaduku under rare centralized kingship while keeping Orya and Ityor institutions. Missions arrived in Mbaduku in 1932 during his reign.

Border families

Mbaduku sits on a marriage frontier with Obudu. Mixed houses have often been treated as ceasefire ground when fighting reached the boundary.

Neighbours

Neighbours, market and covenant

Relations with the Bette / Udam of Obudu are old, intimate and sometimes violent — market rivalry between Tsar and Obudu, and later peace sealed by ikyuryan (covenant) before God, chiefs and elders. Mbaduku is often described as the Kunav clan most willing to live and trade again once a truce is spoken.

Life

Work, worship and homecoming

Farm and market

Farmers first. Tsar market remains where yam heaps, citrus and talk still meet.

Culture

Shared Tiv world of a’nger cloth, Swange, storytelling and kwagh-hir. Christianity (Catholic and NKST) is widespread beside living custom.

Mbaduku Day

The MDA calls sons and daughters home to Tsar to count progress, award scholarships and honour service.
